Thirty percent of the Common Core anchor reading standards-those listed under "craft and structure"-ask our students to read with one question in mind: "What does the writer do?" This is a different kind of reading than many students are used to doing, and when we teach our students how to notice the moves writers make, we not only sharpen their reading abilities, we also position them to strengthen their writing skills. In this Teaching Edge session, Kelly will discuss ways to move students beyond recognizing what a text says and into understanding the techniques employed by writers.
