Dr John received his medical degree from Christian Medical College, Vellore, Madras University, India and completed a research fellowship with the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He then did a General Surgery training at New York Medical College, and went on to complete a research fellowship and cardiothoracic surgical training at Columbia University, New York in 2002. Dr John has been at the University of Minnesota since 2004 and has been a tenured Professor of Surgery since 2017. He is the Surgical Director of the University's Heart Transplant Program, and a clinical investigator for several trials in the field of mechanical circulatory support.Since July 2022, Dr John has been appointed as the Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He has published over 200 peer reviewed articles focusing on surgery for heart failure and has been a member of the Guidelines committees in heart failure surgery for major societies such as the AHA, ISHLT and recently Co-Chair of the AATS Guidelines Committee.
