Dr. Kim is the President and CEO of Seoul National Nuiversity Hospital and a professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the College of Medicine of Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea.

After receiving a medical degree from Seoul National University College of Medicine and completing a residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Seoul National Hospital, he trained as a clinical fellow in Advanced General Thoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Since he was named a lecturer at Seoul National University in 1996, he has spent the most of his academic career there. From 2012 to 2020, he was chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and director of the Lung Cancer Center at the Seoul National University Cancer Hospital.

He served as the chairman of the Korean Association for Lung Cancer. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Disease of the Esophagus, and Innovation. He is currently a Board of Director of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).

He published over 260 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Nature Genetics, Genomic Research, Cancer Immunology Research, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

He was the recipient of the 53rd Yuhan Medical Award, the Seoul National University College of Medicine Research Achievement Award, the Dr. C. Lillehei Merit Award for Excellence in Clinical Research, and the Johnson & Johnson Medical Award.
