NSBA - Focus Areas

BOARD GOVERNANCE, OVERSIGHT, & ACCOUNTABILITY

Roles and responsibilities of school board members including but not limited to: governance models and executive leadership development for school boards; board/superintendent relationships; funding and budgeting; strategic planning)

INNOVATIONS IN DISTRICT OPERATIONS & FACILITIES  

Procurement practices, planning, and design related to improving district operations and facilities including but not limited to: construction and maintenance; green buildings initiatives, transportation solutions.

EQUITY & INCLUSION 

Strategies and practices related to promoting diversity and inclusion in education including but not limited to: addressing disparities in access to resources and opportunities; strategies for fostering an inclusive school culture; and promoting student voice.

SAFE, SUPPORTIVE, & HEALTHY SCHOOLS 

Establishing and sustaining positive and supportive school cultures and learning communities in ways including but not limited to: developing and implementing effective safety protocols and procedures; addressing mental health and well-being of students and staff; crisis response planning and preparedness; and overall health supports and resources.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT & STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT 

The hiring and retention of high level teachers, administrators, and support staffs in areas including but not limited to: special education and student support services; providing access to high level curriculum; development of unique learning opportunities, programming + instruction (such as CTE programs, Experiential Learning, arts, athletics, early college courses, personalized learning); and utilizing data to drive decision-making and measure success.

CLASSROOMS OF THE FUTURE (TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES TO ENHANCE TEACHING AND LEARNING)  

Technological advances to enhance teaching and learning in areas including but not limited to: understanding and leveraging Artificial Intelligence; ensuring equitable access to technology for all students; and addressing challenges and opportunities of digital learning environments

SCHOOL LAW & POLICY

Understanding and navigating education laws and regulations in areas including but not limited to: compliance and district policy & procedures; and Supreme Court and other federal case law.

FAMILY & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT  

Building positive relationships with stakeholders such as parents, caretakers, and community areas in areas including but not limited to: effective communication strategies for school boards; and engaging parents and caregivers, students, and community members in decision-making.
